Monster Friday: King Kong

King Kong

King Kong has the same general story as Creature from the Black Lagoon, with the addition of marketing:

  1. Monster minding his own business in his little slice of monster paradise.
  2. Man discovers said paradise, disrupting the monster's groove.
  3. Monster retaliates in the only way he knows how, by killing everyone by stealing the girl.
  4. Man retaliates in the only way he knows how by establishing a wilderness area by killing monster, and thereby rescuing girl.

Only in King Kong's case there's an additional step:

  1. Monster minding his own business in his little slice of monster paradise. (same)
  2. Man discovers said paradise, disrupting the monster's groove. (same)
  3. Monster retaliates in the only way he knows how, by killing everyone by stealing the girl. (same)
  4. Man takes behemoth and tries to make as much money as he possibly can, endangering everyone in the process. (new!)
  5. Man retaliates in the only way he knows how by establishing a wilderness area by killing monster, and thereby rescuing girl. (same)

Now, I worked at AOL, so I know all about that additional step #4. (Ads in the email compose screen? Really?) So it's a tale of Man not only being a jerk, but a greedy jerk - trying to control something he didn't understand to make a buck (derivatives trading, anyone?)(oh, the metaphors abound!).

Anyway, the detail I love about this model is the the not-so-little lizards King Kong is stepping on (he's such a brute!). And I'm not so sure how he scooped-up the Bride of Frankenstein, but that hair product sure does hold up!
