Hells Backbone Road

Either way you go, getting from Boulder to Escalante will take your breath away. Most folks take the paved Utah Rt 12, which clings to the Hogsback while both sides of the road fall away. But there's another road, which leads to even wilder views -- Hells Backbone Road.

Pacaya Volcano

When you need a change of pace from the ruined churches and general goings-on of Antigua, you can take an easy day-trip to an actual volcano. It's an easy hike and you have a very good chance of seeing actual real-life lava.

Boulder Mountain

Calf Creek provides the biggest return on investment of all the hiking near Boulder, UT. It has two impressive waterfalls, it cuts a beautiful canyon, and it runs through some of the hardest landscape in the country. On our recent trip out, we made a return hike to the Upper Calf Creek falls.

  • Hotel Marshyangdi Mandala
    Lodging

The Marshyangdi Mandala has both separate cabins and adjoined rooms - we were in a room. And we had a perfectly unremarkable experience here: shower, separate building but hot; room noise, not bad; food, good enough.

  • Eco Lodge
    Lodging

Decent enough place. The rooms are separate cabins - which is better than the 1/8 inch plywood wall that can be between the rooms in other lodges. The shower was not warm and in a separate building (we actually skipped showering - no one wants a cold shower late in the day in Nepal). Food? Okay.

Actually the best thing about this place was the little fuzzy puppy who hung out in the common room. But this was in March of 2010, so don't expect a puppy now.

  • Dhaulagiri Lodge and Restaurant
    Lodging

When in Tatopani, you're there for the hot springs. Dhaulagiri Lodge has a path through its grounds that lead to the more downstream of the two hot springs. And the grounds? They're fruity and flowery and lush green. We had the upstairs room in a separate bungalow witha grand view of the Kaligandaki valley to the north, and a hot shower & western toilet inside. And the food? Very good.

  • Hotel New Yak
    Lodging

The staff at Hotel New Yak was the most helpful of all the lodges we stayed at. We had an excellent room with a 180 degree view of the valley. And the food was tasty. The scary dark shower, although hot, was the only drawback.

Teahouse prices include lodging and dinner for two.

  • Prasanna Hotel and Lodge
    Lodging

I'm actually glad we stayed in Timang - it had a nice vibe to it. Prasanna has great views of Manaslu, the Namun Bhanjyang pass, and the valley. Food unremarkable. Shower in other building and not at all warn.
